Plasma Driven Nitrification
Plasma Is Awesome!
RADOM's Cerawave has revolutionized the use of high-efficiency, microwave-based plasma technology. During the last 15 years, RADOM scientists and engineers have been able to develop a deeply differentiated plasma technology, overcoming many disadvantages of existing plasma sources. Cerawave plasma torch solutions are robust, requiring lower-maintenance, and more efficient than traditional plasma systems. There are no electrodes to replace and there is no contact between plasma and torch parts. The thermal efficiency is extremely high across the entire power spectrum and the plasma torches do not require water cooling. The company has scaled the technology to 100kW per torch module, opening up large-scale, multi-module, multi-MW applications application opportunities in organic fertilizer production, waste-destruction, and renewable energy.
RADOM has been able to deploy its advanced technology to enrich the nitrogen content of the organic fertilizer using only electricity and nitrogen available in the air. The production of high value nitrogen (N) fertilizer is highly scalable in different areas of farming, from mid-size dairy farms with a few hundred cows to poultry farms with millions of chickens. Radom’s advanced proprietary technology enriches the slurry with high-nitrogen-content liquid that has significant benefits for the farmer and the environment. The enrichment process, which makes the fertilizer slightly acidic, stabilizes ammonia and minimizes evaporation – limiting ammonia emissions and nutrient loss.
- Modularity and scalability for farms from a few hundred cows to as large as 12,000 cows and millions of chickens
- Increase in the available N to over 2X through concentration
- Concentration of N in roughly the same volume – buy less volume needed to be land applied
- Reduction of commercial fertilizer use
- Reduction of truck traffic from lower need in commercial fertilizer and lower volume to be land applied
- Lower ammonia emissions by up to 70%
- Additional heat generated – can be used to enhance anaerobic digestion and renewable gas systems efficiency
- Increased crop yields – higher plant uptake
- Application during the growing season without “scorching” the crops
- Soil health improvement
Slurry from livestock holds valuable nutrients and microbes that are beneficial to soils and the growing of crops. However, the slurry is still typically viewed as a waste. While the average nutrient concentration of slurries compared to manufactured sources of nutrient is considerably less, the volume of slurries is far greater and require large storage areas and specific methods to dispose of it for farmers to harness the best nutrient value for their crops.
RADOM's nitrification system is a configurable from a single module to up to 20 modules. It is designed to operate locally on a farm where the outputs feed directly into existing farm systems, making it easy for the farmer to use. These include mixers to deliver enriched organic fertilizer or scrubbers to maintain operational digestors and create enriched organic fertilizer as standalone output. RADOM has delivered its first 10kW pilot and is delivering its first 100kW farm system.
The RADOM enrichment process has significant agronomic, economic, and environmental advantages that create a sustainable circular farming operation with increased profits for the farmers. RADOM’s scalable process enables more fertilizer production on the farm – cutting long value chains and reducing the dependence on chemical fertilizer production from fossil fuels. While significantly reducing NH3, Radom’s process creates a fertilizer product that has a range of different N compounds and other important crop nutrients, including an organic matter fraction.
How It Works?
- Inductive energy transfer - plasma does not touch any parts of the torch
- High thermal efficiency across entire power spectrum
- No water cooling required
- Uniform, large volume, and more stable plasma
- Long-life-cycle magnetron (up to 20k hours) vs. electrodes (up to 1k hours)
